Photograph No. 1 - Pevensey Castle
The castle was originally the Roman fort known as 'Anderida', believed
to have been
built c.340 AD. The Normans erected a wooden palisade inside
the Roman walls
soon after landing. This photo shows part of the Roman wall at extreme
left,
with
c.13th century gatehouse, built by successive owners. Robert,
Count
of Mortain, who was given the fort by Duke William following the battle,
built the inner Norman walls.
