This electronic reproduction deviates from my usual format in that it is comprised entirely of JPEG image files instead of HTML text files. I decided on this format for this work in order to retain it's original character and to accurately reproduce the numerous tables contained within.
In August 1999, a reader recommended that I put this chapter and the following two chapters in PDF format because the current format; i.e., JPEG image files, is terrible. I wholly agreed with him and stated that I would do that. Unfortunately, when I began working on putting the first chapter into PDF format, I discovered that, because of OCR problems with the text, I would have retype the entire chapters. I don't have the time to do this, so I guess these first three chapters of Major Leslie's work will have to remain in JPEG format. I apologize for the inconvenience that I know this will cause you.
Presented here are the first three chapters of the work. They were printed as booklets, with each chapter comprising a booklet. They were given to me way back in June 1997, by George Balco of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, which is located on Martha's Vineyard (a pretty nice neighborhood). I've been very remiss in waiting until now (13 March 1999) to take advantage of George's generosity by publishing this very worthwhile work. It is unfortunate that I am not able to present the complete work.
About chapters I, II and III:
"Chapters IV (1810) and V (1811) were published in 'The Journal of the Royal Artillery', Vol LI No 5, 1924-25, pp.238-59 and Vol LIII No 3, 1926-27, pp.379-87 respectively. Although the end of Chapter V is markedAs announced on my "What's New" page on 21 April 1999, I was able to obtain the chapters mentioned above by David Cowgill and was given permission by the copyright holder to present them on this website.
‘to be continued’, I have so far been unable to find the missing chapters. However, Major Leslie – by then styled ‘Major (Bt. Lieut.-Colonel) J.H. Leslie, R.A. (retired list)’ [‘Bt’ is short for ‘Brevet’] – wrote a complementary article, ‘Medals which were awarded to officers of the Royal Regiment of Artillery for service in the Peninsular War-1808 to 1814’, published in 'The Journal of the Royal Artillery', Vol LI No 6, 1924-25, pp.403-09 (he wrote regularly for this Journal and others)."
