Of the Arquebuƒe a Croc.
THE Arquebuƒe a Croc is a fire-arm, ƒtill found in moƒt
old caƒtles, pretty much reƒembling the barrel of a musket, and ƒuƒtained
by an iron ƒwivel, which is faƒtened to its barrel, and ƒupported by a
ƒort of foot called a chevalet, or three-legged horƒe. This piece was formerly
much uƒed, to mount on battlements, and at loop-holes, but is now almoƒt
entirely neglected, being uƒed no where but in old forts and caƒtles where
it is found. The barrel of the arquebuƒe a croc is larger than that of
a musket, but much leƒs than a cannon's; they are charged in the ƒame manner
as a cannon, and, like them, fired with a match; the range of this piece
is greater than that of a musket.
We ƒhall take
no notice in this work, either of the fuƒil or musket, the piƒtol or the
musketoon, becauƒe theƒe are fire-arms already ƒufficiently known; and
we have already treated of all thoƒe which an officer ought to be acquainted
with, except the carabine and petard.
