Of GRENADOES.
THE Grenado is a kind of little bomb, of the ヂme diameter
as a four-pound bullet, it weighs about two pounds, and is charged with
four or five ounces of powder.
Grenadoes
are thrown by the hand of the バldiers, called from hence Grenadiers; they
have a touch-hole in the ヂme manner as a bomb, and a fuテ of the fame
compoナtion. The バldier fires the fuテ with a match, and throws the grenado
as he is directed; the powder in the grenado taking fire, bursts it into
パlinters, which kill or maim whomバever they reach; a バldier can ツarce
throw a grenado further than 15 or 16 fathom at moフ.
There are
other grenadoes, which are not thrown (from the hand) but rolled into ditches,
trenches, or other places where it is expedient to make uテ of them; theテ
are properly a バrt of bomb, and are from 6 to 3 inches diameter.
