KINCAID:
ADVENTURES IN THE RIFLE BRIGADE
5.75 x 8.75 in.
From the dust jacket: This classic account of life on campaign in the Walcheren, Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns between 1809 and 1815 is reproduced here as it was published in 1830, though reset in contemporary style.
The author, Captain John Kincaid of the 95th Regiment — later to be honoured in recognition of its magnificent service under Wellington as a separate corps within the Army, The Rifle Brigade — was a superb soldier but also the merriest and most fun-loving young man imaginable, as were so many of his brave comrades for, without that love of life in the full, it is hard to see how they would have survived the rigours of four years hardship and dagner as they did — never allowing their superlative standards to fall one iota.
Kincaid was also an acute and compassionate observer of human sufferings — an ever present ingredient of life in the Peninsular — his descriptions of the depredations of the French and their wanton cruelty to the Spanish population are unforgettable.
Because, like most military authors of memoirs, Kincaid concentrates on his own experiences and the doings of his beloved regiment and the Light Division, of which the 95th formed so important a part, the reader who is new to the period may have some difficulty in understanding how Kincaid's story fits into that of the campaigns as a whole. Indeed, because of his great modesty and love of understatement, it is often fhard to appreciate the full significance of the events he is describing. To assist the reader, therefore, a short Foreward, designed to fill in the background, has been inserted in front of the original text.
