NAPOLEONIC QUOTATIONS

Important:  This volume includes quotations taken from antiquity to the 20th century, not just the Napoleonic era, as is implied below in the advertisement provided to me by the publisher.

'I don't know what effect these men will have on the enemy, but, by God, they frighten me.' - Duke of Wellington on replacements sent to him in Spain

THE GREENHILL DICTIONARY OF MILIARY QUOTATIONS is an amazing work of reference on war, and a brilliant source book for quotes on the Napoleonic Wars.

THE GREENHILL DICTIONARY OF MILITARY QUOTATIONS, edited by Peter G. Tsouras, includes a unique collection of 935 sayings by the greatest soldiers from the age of Napoleon and there are hundreds more observations about these soldiers and their battles. With 75,000 words on this era alone, the quotations on the art of war, history, and commanders of the Napoleonic Wars are almost a book in themselves.

Of course the Little Corporal, dominates the array of quotations just as he dominated the age - 418 quotations by the Emperor of the French, making this one of the largest collections of the military wisdom of Napoleon. He is also referenced by 71 quotations. His great adversary, the Great Duke, gives us 114 quotations - a superb collection of Wellington's words on war - and is referenced 16 times. Their clash at Waterloo is found in another 24 quotations. The Russian Suvorov ushers in the beginning of the era, with the soldier-scholars Clausewitz and Jomini writing on its echoes.

Naval aspects of the era are also covered. The immortal Nelson speaks 51 times and is spoken of 21 times. His masterpiece at Trafalgar rates 12 references.
